Community Engagement

Part of WGLPA's mission is to be involved and engaged with the communities we do business in and to take part in initiatives that relate to the shipping industry. Read below to find out more about our engagement activities!

The International Propeller Club, Port of Chicago

Being a part of the International Propeller Club allows us to grow and maintain important working partnerships that strengthen our marine community. We aim to contribute to their vision in building relationships, creating opportunities, and attracting investment. In addition, connecting with the International Propeller Club allows us to promote the maritime industry, commerce, and global trade.

Great Lakes Commission

Climate change is more at the forefront of developing policy than it ever has been before. We participate in this organization to monitor policy changes that will effect pilotage on our Great Lakes that we do our work in. Our Assistant Business Manager is currently our representative at the annual meetings.

The shipping industry plays a large part in the economy of the Great Lakes Region. We participate in this organization to demonstrate commitment to our community. Our Business Manager is our current representative at these meetings.

Chamber of Commerce

Supporting local businesses is important to us. We partake in our local Chamber of Commerce to support and network with the businesses in our area.

Sault Young Professionals

The Sault YP is a growing group of young individuals shaping the workforce in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Both the Business Manager and Assistant Manager are members of this group to further promote WGLPA's presence in a positive way. Our Assistant Manager also sits on the Sault YP Board.

Michigan Works Economic Development Board

Michigan Works! plays a large part in employment initiatives in Michigan. Our Business Manager is currently a Board Member and helps to promote jobs and the economy on behalf of WGLPA.

Chippewa County Township Boards: City of Sault Ste. Marie, Brimley TWP, & Detour TWP

WGLPA participates in three separate Township Boards located in Chippewa County where we have a physical presence. Our main office is currently located within the City of Sault Ste. Marie. The City Commission meetings inform us on local projects like the Sault Ste. Marie Lock Project and conversation on its development. We have Pilot Boat operations in Brimley and Detour and attend town meetings in those locations as well.
